Global luxury group, Kering, and the Cannes Film Festival presented Viola Davis with the 2022 Women In Motion Award this Sunday, May 22. The Oscar-winning actress’ work both on and off-screen is recognized through this prestigious award.
Viola Davis Is 2022’s Recipient of the Women In Motion Award
Davis received this award during the Women In Motion dinner in Cannes, France. “Viola Davis, known throughout the world for her acting roles and her commitment to the rights of women and minorities, is one of the most influential American actresses and producers of her time,” a press release from Kering reads.

Davis’ activism work extends far and wide. From giving a moving speech during the 2018 Women’s March empowering women to becoming a spokesperson for the No Kid Hungry campaign. She’s also been vocal about the limited opportunities for Black actors and actresses to succeed in Hollywood.
“This lack of diversity in the industry led her to create her own production company, JuVee Productions, with her husband Julius Tennon. The move enabled her to develop many stories and roles that would not have existed otherwise,” the statement goes on to read.
Moreover, Davis released her #1 New York Times bestselling memoir “Finding Me” in April. In the memoir, she gets candid about growing up in an underprivileged background and the impact it had on her. All of these accolades and more are all reasons why Kering chose Davis as the 2022 recipient of this award.
“Since its launch in 2015, the [Women In Motion] program has been rewarding and highlighting women’s creativity and unique contribution to culture and the arts, and their role in helping to transform our vision of the world through their work,” Kering’s statement adds.
Davis joins a list of previous winners of this award, which include fellow actresses such as Jane Fonda (2015), Susan Sarandon (2016) and Salma Hayek (2021).
