Bison Forever

On Thursday, April 14, 2022 Howard University’s President Dr. Wayne A. I. Fredrick released a statement that an award winning actress, author, & mental health advocate will be this year’s Commencement Orator. Recently appointed by President Joe Biden to join the House HBCU Initiative advisory board. Yes that’s right – the now Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, Theater Arts Bison Alumnus Taraji P. Henson, from the graduating class of 1995, will be this year’s Commencement Orator.

Most importantly, Fredrick acknowledged that Ms. Henson is, “An accomplished actress and fierce champion for HBCUs and the African American community at large. Ms. Henson exemplifies the university tenets of excellence in truth and service. We could not be more excited to have her join us in celebrating the graduating Class of 2022.”

Returning to the Mecca

In addition, Ms. Henson, expressed, “I am honored and humbled to be returning to my alma mater, Howard University, to deliver this year’s commencement address to the graduating Class of 2022 and their families. In other words, returning to Howard always feels like coming home. Therefore, as a fellow Bison, I cannot wait to share this incredible moment with the study body as they prepare to take their next step in their journeys to success.”

It is a true honor to be asked to return to your alma mater to be a speaker. Henson for instance, is one of many that have returned to the Mecca for such an occasion.  Similarily, we see below the late Chadwick A. Boseman delivered a very empowering speech at the 2018 Commencement Ceremony.

Above all, one of the many Howard University traditions is to present each Speaker with a Honorary Doctoral Degree.  Therefore, upon completion of her speech, Henson, will be receiving the Doctor of Humane Degree. The 154th Commencement Ceremony will take place on the Yard, Saturday, May 7, 2022.
