Oscars 2021: Who Were The Winners

It’s been a while since the last Academy Awards ceremony (14 1/2 months) and in a year that put everything on hold, the Oscar finally happened last night.

Even though COVID-19 almost ended the movie theater experience in 2020, very memorable films did find their way to your screens through ways of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max and were recognize Sunday night in a ceremony in L.A.’s Union Station. Nomadland was last night’s  the big star, and also made history, bringing home awards for Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Director (Chloé lZhao), who is now the first Black woman and the second woman ever to win that category.

The Oscars have been working on their historical lack of representation, with 9 of the 20 acting slots had Black actors. Daniel Kaluuya won in the Supporting Actor category for his performance as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah — it ended up being one of the two awards that the film won last night. While the late Chadwick Boseman was a favorite to win the Best Actor category for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Anthony Hopkins took home the win for The Father, becoming the oldest actor to win an Oscar at 83 years old.

There were other great moments and wins for inclusion. Soul directed by Kemp Powers snagged two wins: Best Animated Film and Best Original Score. R&B artist H.E.R. won Best Song for “Fight For You” from the film Judas and the Black Messiah. And Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom won awards for Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling, with Jamika Wilson and Mia Neal becoming the first Black women to win in the category.
