Instagram Reels vs. TikTok: Adapting to social media marketing features

TikTok has been killing the social media game for quite some time, but a new platform is on the block: Instagram Reels.

Instagram Reels were introduced late last summer and seemed to be right up TikTok’s alley.

TikTok is a fan favorite, but Instagram reels are becoming popular with many brands and influencers using this feature.

When it comes to making content for Reels, some brands and influencers have even utilized their success from TikTok by reposting their TikTok content on IG Reels.

What makes Instagram Reels different from TikTok?

Instagram Reels vs. TikTok: Adapting to social media platforms

Instagram Reels are exclusively on Instagram and are integrated into the app. This means you don’t have to download a separate app or platform to view or create content. Instagram reels can only be a maximum of 30 seconds, whereas TikTok can go up to 60. seconds

As you know, those 30 seconds do make a difference when producing content.

If you are looking to reach a younger, more Gen Z type of audience and like to post for fun, TikTok is the app for you.

Using the reels feature is the way to go if you want to grow your social media following.

Music features

Other TikTok users can use a TikTok video with original sound. Instagram users can do the same, although it isn’t used on TikTok as frequently.

When you save a TikTok to your camera roll, the video saves the music and the watermark. But on Instagram, when you save a reel on to your camera roll, it doesn’t hold the music or watermark.

The Algorithm

TikTok’s “for you” page is customized to your interest.

It’s not entirely clear if the content is shown to you on the explore page is based on interest, location, or what you’ve recently viewed.

Overall thoughts

The main benefit of using TikTok is to captivate the Gen z space and the possibility of going viral in a short amount of time.

The main benefit of using IG reels is that with most brands and influencers already having an established following, it’s easier to connect with the audience.

Instagram reels are less complicated than the use of TikTok, so if you are looking for an older demographic, Instagram reels are the way to go.
