Everything We Know About ‘The Chosen’ Season 6 Ahead of Its Most Emotional and Powerful Chapter

It all comes down to this. After five seasons, “The Chosen” will release the highly anticipated continuation of the story of Jesus of Nazareth…though not quite the ending many have expected. The series first premiered in April of 2019, following the life of Jesus—the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary—through the accounts of his closest friends. The series has gone viral, reaching countries across the world. It’s redefining faith-based storytelling and transforming the lives of all who watch.

What has made this series a phenomenon is the humanity showcased in Jesus, played by Jonathan Roumi. Here’s a full look at “The Chosen” and what season six has in store for viewers and believers alike.

Let’s Recap the First 5 Seasons of the ‘The Chosen’

Season 1

In season one, we’re introduced to Jesus, who’s just beginning His mission and invites followers to join Him. This is where we’re introduced to the backstories of His closest followers: Mary Magdalene, Simon Peter and Matthew. Audiences had the opportunity to watch Scripture unfold before them on screen. Viewers are transported as they watch the struggles, decisions, and faith of everyday people in the presence of an all-powerful Savior.

Season 2

We continue to season two, where we meet more followers and their backstory. The ministry of Christ continues to gain popularity among people, but there’s tension among religious leaders. Through this tension, many of His followers battle with what it means to leave everything to follow Him.

In an interview with Father Mike Schmitz, Jonathan discusses the importance of his portrayal of Jesus. “Because of that responsibility, it’s a role that I will have so much humility about,”  he says. He goes on to share that he is forever grateful for this opportunity, “And it’s so sacred and it’s not something I ever want to take for granted.”

He strives to keep it as real as possible for viewers and new believers of the faith.

Season 3

Season three becomes the turning point for Jesus as his popularity meets physical opposition. The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most famous and influential teachings. It covers the important values each person should live by, influencing all who heard it thousands of years ago and continues to do so today.

Recorded in the book of Matthew, we watch as this sermon particularly affects one of the disciples. Played by Paras Patel, he gives a special take on the character, who was a tax collector. Portraying him as an autistic man not only has provided representation but also relatability. During a deep dive into Matthew, Patel shares what he learned about his character, saying, “He seeks to learn; he just wants to understand things, and the way he asks them may not be the most finesse.”

Season 4

Though there are seasons with areas of creative freedom, some have been used to add context. Take Season 4, which dives deeper into Thomas’s character. In the Bible, he’s known as “Doubting Thomas” because of his unbelief that Jesus had risen from the Dead—spoiler alert. But what was creatively done in this season brought some of that doubt to the forefront, a doubt many people can relate to in the midst of pain and grief.

In the show, after losing his betrothed, Thomas begins to question everything. His purpose was that Jesus didn’t save her, but was able to bring someone else back to life. According to Digital Journal, Vahedi enjoyed playing this character and altering perceptions. “Thomas goes through such a whirlwind of experiences that reveal his humanity. It’s been fun to bring that to life. Even had people tell me they see themselves in Thomas. They understand why he is who he is,” he said.

Season 5

You can feel the tension as season five begins. Circling around Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, conflict now takes hold of one close to Him. It builds to the gathering of the Last Supper—where betrayal hovers closely like fog. Though many audiences know what is to come, there is still an added shock factor. A historical figure who teaches, heals and accepts all those who are burdened and lost is being accused of unlawful wrongdoing. So many themes throughout the season can still be seen today: hope, grief, betrayal, faith, perseverance and more.

What To Expect In Season 6

Dallas Jenkins, the director of “The Chosen,” has shared what it’s been like directing the series. “It’s been the most exhausting, the most difficult, the most refining thing I’ve ever done,” he said. “And I think that’s how God wants it. I think He wants us to give a bit of a sacrifice to portray His ultimate sacrifice.”

Season six is not a conclusion; it’s the climax, the most crucial moment in Jesus’ life. It will focus on the final hours leading up to the crucifixion, a brutal method of punishment that causes a slow and agonizing death.

Why Watching This Death Is Important

This is where the spiritual weight is felt the most, as the disciples who have been following their Lord grapple to understand what Jesus has been preparing them for. When you look back at all the seasons, you see how they led them to this moment. It leads us to this moment. The love and sacrifice, the fulfillment of a promise that was prophesied thousands of years prior.

This is an invitation to see that a blameless and sinless man willingly welcomed a painful death to atone for the sins of the world. Not just their sins, but ours, our children’s. Why? Because He loves you, He loves me and He wants us to have a relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Yes, it will be uncomfortable, raw and emotional—and that is okay. The greatest act of love is laying down your life for another, and we are seeing the physical manifestation of that.
