Chioma Nnadi Becomes the First Black Female Editor To Lead British Vogue

With fashion month in full swing, the industry received a significant shift on Monday as fashion news director Chioma Nnadi was named head of editorial content for British Vogue. The news comes after Edward Enninful, the UK publication’s current editor-in-chief, announced in June that he was stepping down. Enninful was the editor-in-chief for six years. Giving statements to Condé Nast, Nnadi, Enninful and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour all reacted to the news as the fashion title will have its first Black female head starting on October 9.

“I’m beyond excited and honored to have been appointed as British Vogue’s Head of Editorial Content,” Nnadi says. “As someone who was born and raised in London, the energy of the city — its boundary-pushing style and creative scene — has shaped the way I look at the world.”

Nnadi, who joined Vogue in 2010 as a fashion news writer, will take over Enninful’s role and lead British Vogue’s multiple platforms while being based in London. “I am so thrilled that Chioma is joining British Vogue — she is a brilliant and unique talent with real vision, who will take the publication to ever greater heights,” Enninful says.

In her new role, Nnadi will also work closely alongside Wintour. Anna has spoken highly of her passion for fashion, music and culture. “I can’t think of a more worthy person to follow in his footsteps than Chioma, who has proven herself adept at speaking to our digital audience and has found ways to extend Vogue’s reach, authority and influence across all of our platforms,” Wintour says.

What’s Next

Nnadi’s appointment comes at a time when Vogue is seeing several restructuring changes. Still, she’s committed to evolving the publication, especially in their digital endeavors. “Now, more than ever, it feels like a moment to look beyond borders while also celebrating the broad scope of what it means to be British. I’m looking forward to engaging a loyal and inspired digital community that is energized by our access, point of view, and storytelling,” she concludes.
