As a server at a wine bar, I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by what is in their glass. Whether it’s a dirty martini, a glass of Cabernet or a virgin piña colada, everyone’s drink of choice reveals a little something—personality with a splash of flavor. Over time, I’ve watched people order drinks as if it were a personality test in disguise. The quiet, the mysterious, the bold or the nostalgic—they all show up. So, grab your favorite (or see if I pegged you right), and let’s explore what vibes your drink says about you.
1. Martini

There are many types of martinis to choose from. Whether you’re a fan of the James Bond “shaken, not stirred” Vesper martini or a “Sex and the City” Cosmopolitan girl, you like to be in control of the situation. You want to savor, feeling sophisticated while holding the rim of the glass. But watch out for the espresso martini drinkers: you’re in a different league. Still sophisticated and smooth, however, slightly over caffeinated and about to make questionable decisions.
2. Wine

Going back centuries, wine has been the universal unwind drink as it brings people together. It’s also the ultimate party trick since… well, you know who turned water into it. Whether boxed or vintage, you’re ready to let the stress of the day melt away. Whites are for spring and summer challenges, and reds are for fall and winter cuffing seasons and awkward family gatherings.
3. Gin and Tonic

This crisp drink is simple and light on calories. So, if your go-to drink order is a gin and tonic, you’re likely a thinker and an intellectual. Additionally, you’re someone who enjoys people watching as well as discussing critical ideas. Not to mention, you’re approachable with a hint of mysteriousness.
4. Jack and Coke

For those who swear by Jack and Coke, you have a nostalgic personality. You’re confident and a tad rebellious, with a traditional side and a nice kick of adventure. You probably have a few stories to share, but may only share the tame versions.
5. Old Fashioned

You’re the deep thinker and the storyteller. The one who savors life, as well as someone who has had so many experiences, can lay down some knowledge. An absolute charmer that can carry a long conversation, maybe even after the ice melts.
6. Mixed Drink

You’re creative, adaptable and experimental. You feel life is better with a little twist. It isn’t the time for complicated stuff, as you prefer to disguise the taste of liquor. As with life, you sometimes pretend things are well when actually, you need something to take the edge off.
7. Margarita

A margarita is the life of the party, whether with a salted or sugar rim. You’re ready for fun and need the music turned all the way up. You’re sweet, sassy and don’t need a reason to have a margarita—even on a Tuesday. I mean, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere.
8. Tequila

You’re ready for an adventure. You have a vibrant personality and readily embrace the idea of “living in the moment.” You take unpredictability head-on, not afraid to get down and dirty if necessary.
9. Beer

You’re a realist and laid back. Some may say the new “wine-snobs” with all the different knowledge of beer and how it’s made. Very social, simple and can keep everyone laughing. Just make sure you keep your feet on the ground, leave that to the college kids!
10. Hennessy

All I can say is that you’re probably at a family function or chilling at home with friends. If you’re ordering this while out, then you’re probably ready for something or someone to pop off.
11. Long Island Iced Tea

You want to loosen inhibitions quickly and, for some reason, haven’t taken the time to explore other options just yet. You stick to what you know and can feel good after two. If three or more deep, you purposefully don’t want to remember anything that happens.
12. Shots

You’re bold, impulsive and fully committed. Essentially, you jump right in. Regrets? Possibly, the next day, but in the moment, you’re ready to succumb to the blackness of night.
13. Mocktails

You can have fun and remember the night. You have a carefree energy that doesn’t need alcohol, just like ever-popular sober curious movement. You sparkle in a room without the buzz. You’re secure and ready to document the events around you, capturing proof of what took place.
One Last Thing Before You Raise Your Glass
At the end of the day (or night), drinks vary, but one thing is for sure—they bring us together. Strangers become friends, laughter flows and conversations stretch longer than expected. Your choice isn’t about what’s in your drink. It’s about who you are, and that’s someone who’s living in the moment. Just remember to take it one sip at a time and get home responsibly. Whatever you order, make it your own…and if I’m ever your server, tip generously and tell me if I guessed you right.
