In a society full of screen-based entertainment, watching television is a longstanding, reliable and historic form of modern entertainment. Dating back many decades, when television was a household staple in America, it brought everyone together and played a significant role in escapism. Today, cable and television remain traditional and accessible, used to escape reality. However, it’s no longer the only way to access TV-quality entertainment. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are shifting to watching livestreams for amusement and enjoyment. Let’s dive into what readers and viewers should know about the youth’s new perception of streaming and television.
Television Once Led, Now It’s Time To Change the Channel
When younger audiences hear the word screens today, they often think of their smartphones, tablets or laptops. But there was once a time when television was the only screen worth mentioning. Television has maintained a reputation unlike any other form of entertainment despite it currently sharing the stage with streaming. It’s essential to remember that the visual storytelling in television captured audiences and made viewers feel more engaged. Additionally, the convenience of television as a source of entertainment without leaving home was an added benefit for families, especially in America, where the working class was growing. Watching TV became the conversation starter, the shared experience, the escapism, the motivation, the anticipation, the life-changer for many people. The qualities that draw people to sit in front of the television have not changed but rather evolved, and it’s time to flip the channel.
In 2026, conversation starters, shared experiences, and entertainment can now be found beyond the traditional rectangular television screen, through streaming. Today it’s all about personality, consistent entertainment, interactivity, participation, accessibility, engagement, and connection. Gen Z (born between 1998 and 2012) and Gen Alpha (born between 2012 and 2024) are connected in real time through streams, and it’s enjoyable for many. The use of the “chat” feature allows viewers to feel like they’re directly involved and talking to the creators involved in a stream. “Clipping” highlighted parts of a stream has become a conversation starter around the globe. Scheduled streams and stream announcements build anticipation for viewers, similar to when an episode of traditional television ended, and viewers had to wait until next week. Streaming has adopted many qualities from traditional television to make and provide a new interactive experience for all.
So What Entertainment Does It Provide—and What Are Streamers Doing?
Compared to recorded television shows, expecting the unexpected is always important when watching streams. Viewers never know what a streamer has on their bingo card, creating hype and entertainment. With no pause or play button, anything can occur- the wildest things to fit streamers’ personalities, and that’s quite literally the entertainment. The extent to which streamers go to entertain audiences is unpredictable and significant. From theme-based gaming streams and IRL streams to dating shows that mimic reality television, to college life streams like Streamer University, the streaming world offers so many avenues that keep Gen Z and Gen Alpha exploring for more. Each of these avenues is heightened by production. Streaming isn’t just sitting in front of a camera and talking from the living room. Today’s top streamers provide commitment, dedication and effort into creating engaging content. Behind the scenes, months to years of planning go into it, similar to actual television production.
Among Twitch’s top streamers, Bronx native Kai Cenat has built relevance in streaming. Cenat’s content separates traditional television from streaming yet still reminds viewers of watching their favorite reality show. His latest creation, Streamer University, a five-day event held on a college campus, was designed for up-and-coming streamers to bond and gain experience from professional streamers, helping them grow and perfect their craft. Streamer University was a prime example of production executed with precision and effort. 24-hour entertainment for five days straight nearly felt like a marathon of a favorite show running for five consecutive days. Distributing television quality without being on cable television takes time. Streamers like Cenat have camera crews, editors, security, celebrity guests, sponsors, and so much more that create the TV-quality effect without needing the actual television.
Has Streaming Changed What Gen Z and Gen Alpha Expect From Entertainment?
Gen Z and Gen Alpha often value and gravitate toward what many call today “aura,” known as authenticity. Live streaming allows streamers to display their personality in front of thousands on platforms such as Kick, Twitch, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. But the real question is, how has livestreaming shifted youth perception? The expectations these generations have for entertainment have evolved. Many younger audiences increasingly prefer to watch unscripted live events as they occur.
Younger audiences are expanding their palettes, leaving behind traditional television and watching digital videos. Research company EMARKETER has reported that “Gen Z gravitates toward digital video over traditional television. Nearly all Gen Zers (96.3%) are digital video viewers, compared with 80.5% of the general population.” According to EMARKETER, 52% of Gen Z prefer to watch creators over celebrities; they feel a closer connection to creators. For the younger generation, entertainment isn’t about the finished result but rather the real, true vibe it brings from the screens into their rooms.
Does the Future of Entertainment Begin With a ‘Go Live’ Button?
While it’s still premature to dictate what the future of entertainment looks like, evidence and experience make it clear that it does not end with a television screen. The new generation has demonstrated to the world that livestreaming has just as much impact on entertainment as traditional media. Still bridging the gap between traditional television and modern digital culture, livestreaming proves that television isn’t disappearing but rather making room for streaming to be front and center as well. By sharing many of the same experiences, streaming allows viewers to interact more with their entertainment. Capturing an audience’s attention is what matters most beyond the screen. Whether that be an iPad, iPhone, Android tablet or a TV screen connection, engagement seems to be drawing people, especially Gen Z and Gen Alpha, and their likeness of live streaming’s authenticity.
