What ‘Stranger Things’ Taught Us About Friendship in a Very Upside-Down World

If you haven’t tuned into “Stranger Things”, known not just for its horror and thrills but for its unforgettable display of friendship, loyalty and ride-or-die energy, you’re seriously missing out. (In the words of TLC, “What about your friends?) When it comes to being a true-blue crew with besties for life, this cast sets the bar high. Their bond isn’t just TV magic—it’s the kind of camaraderie we all secretly wish we had in real life. Here’s a deep dive into what this wildly popular sci-fi/mystery Netflix series taught us about friendship.

Season 1: Let’s Get Into It

In this season, we meet the “set-it-off crew”, consisting of Will, Mike, Dustin and Lucas. Four ordinary boys who spend their evenings playing Dungeons & Dragons in Mike’s basement. But everything changes when Will disappears on his bike ride home. His loyal friends, Mike, Dustin and Lucas, along with his determined mother, Joyce, his protective brother, Jonathan, and a handful of unexpected allies, stop at nothing to find him.

During their search, they discover Eleven (aka El), a mysterious girl with a shaved head, a limited vocabulary, and powers far beyond their understanding. While Lucas is skeptical at first (and honestly, who wouldn’t be?), the boys quickly realize El may be the key to bringing Will home. From government conspiracies, supernatural forces and Demogorgons to the terrifying dimension known as the Upside Down, this group faces it all together. And through every twist and every moment of fear, one thing becomes clear:

Their loyalty is unmatched. I mean… how many people do you know who would take on the government and supernatural forces just to bring you back home? Exactly.

Season 2: When Loyalty Gets Tested

Will is home, but he’s not the same. Haunted by the Mind Flayer and the Upside Down, he’s battling trauma that no one else can fully understand. And on top of that, El is missing. Once again, the crew steps up. They support Will with patience, comfort and protection—never shame, never judgment. They see him for who he is, not just what he’s gone through.

Meanwhile, Mike is grieving over El’s disappearance, completely unaware that she’s alive and being secretly protected by Hopper—the grumpy yet unexpectedly soft father figure none of us knew we needed. Lucas develops a new bond with Max, adding a little tension to the group, but nothing more than a typical shift in a middle-school friendship.

Season two shows us that real loyalty doesn’t just show up in the big moments—it shows up in the quiet ones, too. This crew doesn’t run when things get messy. They stay.

Season 3: New Vibes, New Threats, Same Ride-or-Die Energy

Everyone is growing up. Relationships are forming, feelings are shifting, and life isn’t as simple as it used to be. But even with all the changes, their bond stays strong.

Mike and El give us teenage first-love energy

Lucas and Max bicker adorably

Dustin introduces his “girlfriend”, Suzie

Will longs for the days before everything got complicated

And El begins losing her powers—bringing the group closer than ever

We also get the iconic Dustin and Steve duo, plus Robin and Erica, delivering humor, bravery, and surprising new friendships. The final battle at Starcourt Mall, with fireworks, monsters, blood and chaos, shows just how much these characters are willing to sacrifice for one another. And Hopper’s apparent death? It breaks everyone, including us. Season three reminds us that friendship evolves, but the real ones evolve with you.

Season 4: In the Thick of It—The Season That Broke Us (In the Best Way)

Season four is where everything intensifies. Hawkins isn’t just the weird town anymore—it’s the battleground. These kids, once just D&D players, have become full-on warriors.

The crew is split for the first time:

El’s family is in California

The rest remain in Hawkins

Hopper is alive but suffering in Russia

Max’s grief becomes the emotional center of the season. She’s pulling away, drowning silently, but her friends refuse to let her fall alone. When Vecna targets her, they move in unison—love, protection and presence. “Running Up That Hill” becomes more than a song. It becomes a lifeline. El struggles to regain her powers and identity, but her friends rally behind her. Mike and Will’s friendship deepens in ways that reflect the complexities of growing up.

Across the world, Hopper fights to survive while Joyce risks everything to bring him home. Their reunion proves that family isn’t always blood—sometimes it’s the people who choose you. By the final battle, the group, scattered across states and continents, works toward one goal: to stop Vecna and save Max. From El’s psychic showdown to Eddie’s heroic sacrifice, loyalty is at the core of every moment.

Season four isn’t just about monsters—it’s about the kind of loyalty that carries people through grief, fear, trauma and distance. If seasons one through three showed childhood friendship, Season 4 shows how that friendship becomes family.

Season 5: Loyalty as Their Last Line of Defense

With Hawkins sealed off and the Byers living with the Wheelers, the original crew is finally under one roof again. Even as the world unravels, they lean on each other the same way they did when everything first began. El trains with Hopper in the Upside Down, fueled not by fear, but by love for the family she’s built. Will’s deepening connection to the Hivemind could isolate him—yet his friends stay close, proving he doesn’t have to battle anything alone.

Vecna’s plan to use “perfect vessels” raises the stakes, especially when children like Holly Wheeler are in danger. But every threat (military lockdowns, new scientists, and the unknown lurking in the Upside Down) only strengthens the group’s unity. Season five, more than anything, underscores one truth: their loyalty to one another is the real force that can end this fight.

If you haven’t started Season 5 yet, don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything major. What I can say is this: the loyalty, the heart, the “we’re in this together no matter what” energy? It’s still front and center. Even with Hawkins on the brink and stakes higher than ever, the crew stays up and sticks the way only they can. Everybody shows up, everybody plays their part and everybody brings something irreplaceable to the table. Their bond doesn’t fade under pressure—it shines through it.

Season five continues to prove what the show has been preaching since day one: Monsters may evolve, dangers may escalate, but real friendship remains the strongest force in the Upside Down or anywhere else.
