I’ll be honest, I didn’t really know much about “The Pitt” until recently. I saw HBO Max was offering the first episode for free even if you didn’t have a subscription, so I decided to watch. “The Pitt” came in with a bang and is truly a drama-filled, layered story. It’s a hospital show that’s highly character-driven, centered around the emergency room of a Pittsburgh trauma center. With Noah Wyle as the star of the show, it gives the impression of a modern-day “Hawthorne.” But, when news of Supriya Ganesh leaving “The Pitt” hit my radar, I decided to dive deeper into the show and what’s next for the actress who portrays Dr. Mohan.
Understanding the First 2 Seasons Of ‘The Pitt’
The first season was mainly about the various chaotic ER cases the staff dealt with in a single shift. Ganesh’s character, Dr. Mohan, can be considered a foundational asset to the show’s overall success. Her performance didn’t rely heavily on the big, dramatic moments. Instead, it was subtle and stand-alone that made you notice she was there. Dr. Mohan’s storyline focused on her navigation towards finding a work-life balance. And possibly a love interest with an attending was her introduction.
Season two of “The Pitt” premiered in early January. We got a deeper look into Dr. Mohan’s character arc. Supriya Ganesh shared in a Teen Vogue article, “It really breaks my heart that something as trivial, to me, as money could stand in between a patient and the care they need.” Her character spotlighted how budget cuts make healthcare less accessible for people. With her, Dr. Mohan experienced a close family death that motivated her to stand in the gap for other patients.
And that’s what her character represents. Dr. Mohan exists in the gaps for people. She’s not a main character, but a character that quietly shapes the show’s tone throughout the nuances of ER life. Although she had her personal challenges with work-life balance and dealing with her mother, Dr. Mohan brings a grounded presence that carries a lot of weight.
Which is why it’s a huge deal that Ganesh is leaving the show after two incredible seasons.
Executive Producer R. Scott Gemmill chops up her departure to the ebbs and flows of a hospital staff. People come and go. It’s part of the process to keep the show’s storylines fresh. That same sentiment can be said about “Grey’s Anatomy,” where over the last 21 seasons, at least 15 main characters didn’t return.
The season finale aired on April 16th, with Dr. Mohan trying to figure out her future and next move while in residency. So it shouldn’t be too hard to explain why she was written off the show.
Ganesh hasn’t officially made a statement. She’s only made comments on where she’d like to see Dr. Mohan’s character go before the season finale aired and before the official announcement of her departure.
However, co-star Noah Wyle spoke to Variety regarding Supriya’s departure from the show. “Obviously, Supriya has been a huge part of our show since the beginning,” Wyle said. “And I love playing with her and working with Supriya, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavors. We’re going to miss her.”
What’s Next For Ganesh?
A great perspective on this early departure is the fact that she was a character for the first two seasons. Ganesh can be recognized as Dr. Mohan’s “founding character”. She’s a part of the foundation of the show. A show that increased its viewership by 200% for the second season.
It enhances her career longevity as an actress. Unless she decides to pivot…

Before appearing on “The Pitt,” Ganesh graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience. Even in the first season of the series, she kept her tutoring job until the spotlight became a conflict.
She was even vocal last year when journalists were confusing her with other brown cast members on the show. Supriya was born in the United States, moved to India as a young child and later returned to study neuroscience. The South Indian actress has shared that she’s been confused with Alexandra Metz, who plays Dr. Garcia.
There are so many avenues Supriya might take, whether she wants to continue pursuing acting, return to the medical field, advocate for Black and Brown communities or simply explore something different.
