Former Nickelodeon Stars Respond to Dan Schneider’s Apology

Dan Schneider recently uploaded an interview to his YouTube Channel, in which he apologizes in response to his past behaviors at Nickelodeon. More specifically, Schneider responds to the accusations made in HBO’s new docuseries, “Quiet On Set.” Within the first five minutes of the 19 minute interview, Schneider says he “owe[s] some people a pretty strong apology.” Despite the interview, former Nickelodeon stars share mixed reactions. For example, some argue that Schneider’s apology is not valid because he only offered a public apology. Regardless of our thoughts, the only opinions that matter are from those who felt the impact of Schneider’s actions.

Alexa Nikolas from “Zoey 101′” responded to Schneider’s video on her YouTube channel. During her video, she accuses Schneider of centering the discomfort he created on set around himself. Nikolas found this to be selfish. She says, “You’re embarrassed; not enough to like go up to the people you actually harmed.”

In the interview, BooG!e, most famously known for playing T-Bo on iCarly, immediately addresses the numerous accusations against Schneider presented in the docuseries. Even though Schneider apologizes and one can even say he takes accountability for his past actions, there is a fine line when it comes to whether someone is worthy of forgiveness for their past actions. People determine that line on a case-by-case basis.

Taking Into Account Everyone’s Responses

Unlike Nikolas, Leon Frierson from “All That” was content with Schneider’s apology video. Frierson said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “While his apology and response to rumors is incredibly timely, and could have come sooner, it is welcomed. However, I can’t speak for all those affected by his actions.” Additionally, Frierson added, “To me, it’s important to note that [Dan Schneider’s] contribution to a toxic work environment does not include sexual crimes and shouldn’t necessarily be connected with convicted offenders.”

Despite being conflicting, both Nikolas’ and Frierson’s responses are valid. Similarly, the responses of every former Nickelodeon star matter.

Most importantly, remember to give space to those who have not shared responses. Not making public statements does not mean that they do not have feelings towards the unsettling news. The docuseries contains heavy material and we should respect the ways people take to process such information.
