‘A Different World’ Sequel Is in the Works: Here’s What We Know So Far

Now repeat after me: relax, relate, release. Relax, relate, release. Why? Because “A Different World” is coming back with an all-new generation—this time on Netflix.

The beloved 90s sitcom followed fan favorites Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. They navigated the complexities of college life, adulthood, and cultural experiences at the fictional Hillman College. Kadeem Hardison portrayed Dwayne. A math whiz who enjoyed using his intelligence—often behind his signature flip-up glasses—to win over the ladies.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Guy brought Whitley to life as the stylish, wealthy and sometimes pretentious southern belle. Known for her impeccable fashion and unforgettable one-liners, she exuded “bad and bougie”.

Who Will the ‘A Different World’ Sequel Follow?

The sequel series will focus on their daughter, Deborah Wayne, as she goes to college. She will follow in her parents’ footsteps by attending their alma mater, an Historically Black College and University (HBCU). We will watch her learn what it means to create her own legacy outside of her parents’ shadow.

Tony Award-winning actress Maleah Joi Moon will portray Deborah. Moon is known for her standout performance in “Hell’s Kitchen.” And perhaps, we will be graced with her vocal abilities on a musical episode.

According to Netflix’s Tudum, she will be accompanied by a dynamic new class. This includes Alijah Kai from “Everybody Hates Chris” as Rashida, “One of Us Is Lying” star Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, “Doing Life” actor Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, and “The Idea of You”’s Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, alongside newcomer Kennedi Reece as Hazel.

Alums Freddie Brooks (Winifred Brooks) and Ron Johnson will also be heading back to Hillman. They were played by Cree Summer and Darryl Bell. Last time audiences saw them, Freddie had moved past seeing Ron as “a greasy worm with the charm of a cockroach,” and the two had grown into a couple.

Who Will Handle the Sequel Series?

Debbie Allen will return to “A Different World,” but under a different major. Once as Whitley’s psychiatrist, Dr. Langhorne, she will continue her studies, directing and standing as executive producer.

Felicia Pride is the show’s top showrunner and executive producer. She is notably known for her work on acclaimed shows “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Bel-Air.” Her accolades include her books “Everybody Hates First Girlfriends” (2007) and, most recently, “Come Close” (2025). She screenwrote “Really Love” (2023) starring Uzo Aduba, Blair Underwood, Michael Ealy, Kodiak Siriboe and Jade Eahete.

Spelman College alumna Ashley Laverne Jackson is stepping into her purpose by joining this project. She is the daughter of the late civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson. Reverend Jackson graced the original series in season two, in an episode called “Citizen Wayne.” Ashley will serve as a contributing writer for the sequel series, bringing her own creative style, perspective and impact.

Why Is This Revival of ‘A Different World’ Important?

The continuation of “A Different World” will not only evoke nostalgia but also introduce new and recurring themes students face—self-discovery, purpose, education and so much more. The show highlighted community and family, both on and off the screen.

According to EBONY Magazine, in 2018, during Ford’s Ultimate Homecoming Takeover at Southwestern Christian College (SWCC) in Terrell, Texas, the cast of “A Different World” presented a $100,000 scholarship donation. The crowd had the chance to hear how much the show impacted their lives. “We had different classes, different colorings, different backgrounds, different aspirations and that’s one thing I loved about ‘A Different World,’” shared Jasmine Guy about the show. “It showed the true spirit about what being Black is, and that it is diverse within itself.”

The new series is set to have 10 episodes in the first season. The actual release date and more details are expected to follow at a later date.

But for now, get your notebooks, pens and Chanel No. 5 because there will be a quiz after the sequel airs its first episode.
