‘Costume Art’ Is the 2026 Met Gala Theme: What It Really Means for Fashion’s Biggest Night

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced Tuesday that the theme for the 2026 Met Gala will be Costume Art,” celebrating fashion as a living, wearable form of artistic expression. Andrew Bolton, curator in charge at the Costume Institute, described the theme as a tribute to the designers who turn clothing into narrative. “For The Costume Institute’s inaugural exhibition in the Condé M. Nast Galleries, I wanted to focus on the centrality of the dressed body within the Museum, connecting artistic representations of the body with fashion as an embodied artform,” Bolton said in a press release. “Rather than prioritizing fashion’s visuality, which often comes at the expense of the corporeal, ‘Costume Art’ privileges its materiality and the indivisible connection between our bodies and the clothes we wear.”

What To Know About the Met Gala ‘Costume Art’ Theme and Exhibition

The “Costume Art” exhibition will feature works primarily focused on Western art from prehistory to the present. The Met notes that these pieces will connect fashion and art, from formal to conceptual, aesthetic to political, individual to universal, illustrative to symbolic and playful to profound. These pairings are arranged by thematic body types, showing how widespread and enduring they are across cultures and history.

“’Costume Art’ will present a dynamic and scholarly conversation between garments from the Costume Institute and an array of artworks from across The Met’s vast collection, elevating universal and timeless themes while bringing forward new ideas and ways of seeing,” Max Hollein, the Met’s Marina Kellen French director and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “This immensely creative and collaborative exhibition will demonstrate the Museum’s innovative and forward-thinking approach to presenting Costume Institute exhibitions, and will highlight The Met’s unique ability to position fashion within the context of more than 5,000 years of art represented in its collection.”

More Details on the 2026 Met Gala

The gala, which serves as the Costume Institute’s largest annual fundraiser, supports the museum’s historical and contemporary fashion while maintaining conservation and preservation, funding exhibitions, purchasing new pieces and educational programs. The event is set for May 4 (the first Monday in May), and is expected to draw global attention as celebrities, designers and cultural figures interpret the theme with bold silhouettes, intricate detailing and transformative looks that blur the line between costume and high fashion.

While this news reveals the theme of the Met Gala, the dress code that attendees are expected to follow is yet to be announced. Also, the event’s co-chairs will be announced at a later time. The exhibition opens to the public on May 10, while being supported by Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez, Saint Laurent and Condé Nast.
