From war movies to epic love stories, the big screen has seen it all. However, that doesn’t mean the excitement is over. We’re only six months into 2024, and our worlds have already been shaken by so many stories brought to life as films, but there’s more to come. Not only are we expecting great originals, but 2024 also promises a ton of sequels and movies that were delayed due to the Hollywood strikes. Here are 10 movies coming out this year that you won’t want to miss.
1. A Quiet Place: Day One (June 27)
Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, and Alex Wolff are some of the stars joining the cast for “A Quiet Place: Day One.” The film will not only be the third installment of the 2018 film “A Quiet Place” but it will also be a spin-off prequel.
2. Maxxxine (July 3)
“Maxxine” is the third movie in the “X” film series. “X” – the first movie in the series – captivated us with its social commentary on Hollywood’s ageism against women and by bringing back the slasher-horror genre. “X” follows a group of actors set out to create an adult film in rural Texas. The group meets a fatal destiny as the elderly couple hosting them turns out not to be as inoffensive as they seem. While “Pearl” – the second movie in the series – is a prequel, “Maxxxine” will take us right where we left off.
3. Despicable Me 4 (July 3)
Villainous Gru is back, and so are his very popular and very yellow minions. In this fourth installment to the “Despicable Me” franchise, Gru welcomes a new member to the family, Gru Jr. Like in previous movies, we’ll see Gru navigate fatherhood once again, one of his old nemesis threatens the family’s peace.
4. Twister (July 19)
Following the steps of the 1906 film “Twister,” the upcoming film of the same name will be a standalone sequel. Much like its predecessor, the movie will follow a set of characters as they encounter a devastating tornado.
5. Emilia Perez (August 21)
Zoë Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Édgar Ramírez, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz are some of the stars rounding up the cast of “Emilia Perez,” an upcoming musical crime comedy.
6. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (September 6)
This year, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder will return to the Beetlejuice universe as the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice and the eccentric teenager Lydia Deetz. The film will serve as a sequel to the 1996 film “Beetlejuice”. Considering the first film’s cult classic status, we’re excited to see some old and new faces on the screen, one of which will include actress Jenna Ortega.
7. Joker: Folie à Deux (October 4)
Yet another sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux“ will continue the story started in the 2019 film “Joker.” Joaquin Phoenix will return as the Joker, only this time he will be joined by none other than Lady Gaga, who will give life to our anti-hero’s great love: Harley Quinn.
8. Venom: The Last Dance (October 25)
Tom Hardy comes back to the big screen as both Eddie Brock and Venom in the third installment of Marvel’s “Venom” film series. While being persecuted, Eddie and Venom will have to make a difficult decision, bringing them to their “last dance.”
9. Wicked (November 27)
“Wicked” is the movie adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical of the same name. The cast will include stars such as Ariana Grande starring as Glinda, Cynthia Erivo starring as Elphaba, Jonathan Bailey starring as Figaro Tigelaar and Ethan Slater starring as Boq.
10. Nosferatu (December 25)
A tale as old as time, “Nosferatu” is a remake of the 1922 silent film of the same name, which is an adaptation of the 1897 novel “Dracula.” The cast includes stars like Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Emma Corrin, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Nicholas Hoult.
