Trump Found Guilty in “Hush Money” Trial

Earlier this evening, former President Donald Trump received a guilty verdict on 34 felony counts in his ongoing “hush money” trial. After a six-week trial and two days of deliberation, a 12 person jury sided with the prosecutors. Additionally, Trump pled “not guilty”. Yet, Trump was found guilty for falsifying business records to cover up a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. This decision makes Trump the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime.

Judge Juan Merchan set Trump’s sentencing date for July 11. Trump faces up to four years in prison and a $5000 fine for each felony. Judge Merchan possesses flexibility in his sentencing. For example, he can place Trump on probation, home confinement, or simply limit his sentencing to a fine.

Despite denying engaging in sexual relations with Daniels, the allegations followed Trump during his 2016 campaign run.

With Trump still being the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, it is unclear whether or not he will remain the nominee. More answers may come following his official sentencing. When thinking about who one wants to represent their country, a convicted felon isn’t the first thought that comes to mind. However, it’s likely that his followers will care about his conviction.

Moving forward, Trump has the potential ability to set a new precedent across the country of who can be president. Voters now have the ability to shape history for better or worse.
