Top 10 Dating Trends in 2026: How Modern Dating Is Actually Changing

Throughout the dawn of time, dating has evolved. During the Stone Age, humans formed mating groups to avoid inbreeding. Archaeologists have even found jewelry and other objects buried with human remains, suggesting that the groups developed rules, ceremonies and rituals to officiate the exchange of mates between groups. These practices may have foreshadowed modern marriage ceremonies.

Fast forward to the 20th Century. Dating sees a shift from formal, supervised courtships in which suitors tried to impress women under their parents’ watchful eye to casual, public dates where partners often meet at work, school or other public places.

Now, in 2026, singles have the opportunity to go the digital route with over 1,500 dating apps and websites, or take a more organic, yet intentional, approach and go the in-person route. However, just because there’s a plethora of dating apps and niche meet groups now available, it doesn’t mean it’s become easier to find your person.

Currently, dating is undergoing a renaissance, if you will. With the divorce rate continuing to remain steady and content creators warning young women about the “dangers of being married to a man.” People are becoming more strategic in dating, incorporating different techniques to weed out red flags and find compatibility with potential partners.

Here are 10 of the most popular dating trends singles are using to navigate love and find compatible partners in 2026.

1. Political Dealbreakers

Remember when height and income were considered the most important qualities in a partner? Now, politics is taking precedence. Research suggests that women rank political views as one of the most important characteristics in a partner, aside from height, ethnicity, religion, age and education.

It’s not surprising that more women prefer partners who share similar political ideologies, especially with the uptick of conservatism and far-right propaganda. A man’s political views can reveal a lot about his character and how he perceives women, people of color and the overall world around him.

2. Therapy Lingo

“I have an anxious attachment style.” “My nervous system doesn’t feel safe around you.”  These phrases have usually been reserved for professional therapy sessions, but now, the everyday person is using them to communicate their emotional needs, create boundaries and help their partner understand patterns in their behavior. Social media has helped increase mental health awareness, but it’s important not to misuse popular words like narcissist and trauma bond when navigating relationships.

3. Clear Coding

More people are being direct with what they are looking for in a partner and what they want out of a relationship. Mixed signals, testing the waters or dropping subtle hits is so 2020. Clear coding takes out the guessing games of dating and helps reduce situationships and prioritizes compatibility and honesty.

4. Microdating

Forget dinner and a movie. Gen Z is adopting a more efficient approach to micro-dating.  Micro dating involves short, low-pressure dates like 30-minute coffee shop meetups and quick walks to assess compatibility before committing to a full date. This dating practice may seem a bit rushed and impersonal, but it helps create a low-pressure environment where people can be more themselves and not worry about the elaborate and often expensive details of a first date.

5. Friendfluence

In a recent survey conducted by Tinder, over 40% of single people said their friends influence who they date. And if the group chat says he’s a red flag and isn’t convinced about his “potential,” neither are they.

6. Dating Apps are Becoming Obsolete

There have been plenty of horror stories of people being catfished or worse. To avoid these scenarios or just have a more organic connection, people are taking a break from swiping and going the traditional route by approaching people in real life.

Life can get busy, and it’s easy to feel disconnected or like you’re just going through the motions with your partner every day. The “777 rule” is designed to keep couples connected through intentional quality time. The 777 rule consists of a date night every seven days, a weekend away every seven weeks and a vacation every seven months.

9. Shrekking

There have been plenty of positive dating trends, we discussed. But life is not a fairy tale. So, unfortunately, we do have to mention toxic trends to be aware of. Shrekking is inspired by the film “Shrek.” It means dating someone you think is below your league, assuming you’ll have better treatment and the upper hand in the relationship as opposed to dating someone you’d find conventionally attractive.  Sometimes this backfires, and people find themselves getting “shrekked” or getting hurt by someone you believe is below your standards. Maybe next time, don’t be an ogre and date with your ego.

In the age of social media and influencers, having a large following can elevate your personal brand and open doors to the right opportunities. Unlike old school gold digging, clout cashers don’t necessarily care about obtaining wealth. They’re more interested in using their partner’s reputation and online status to boost their ego and online presence.
