It’s that time of the year when Hollywood’s biggest stars gather for the annual Met Gala to open the popular fashion exhibit. One of the biggest events in fashion, that is taken place in New York City on the first Monday of May. Stars spent many hours taking on fittings, while designers spent a good amount of time designing and preparing for the big red carpet moment.
Every year the infamous gala has a theme and this year’s theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, which means exaggerated fashion. This is idea that stems from Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, Notes on “Camp,” which begins by defining the term as “its love of the unnatural, of artifice and exaggeration.” Noting that with camp, it’s not about talking in “terms of beauty” but rather “in terms of the degree of artifice, of stylization.”
The exhibit this year is featuring over 200 pieces of fashion, along with sculptures, paintings, and drawings from the 17th century through today. Designers from Virgil Abloh to Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Rei Kawakubo, Mugler, Bob Mackie, Karl Lagerfeld, and more are featured in the exhibit. Fresh off the Couture Week runways, the Viktor & Rolf slogan couture gowns that sparked an endless stream of memes will also be on display.
This year’s theme gave room for all the invites to be as creative as possible. Here are the stars that gave us pure Camp.
