April 13th at 11:13am I get a text, “Hello Dion, this is Jamaica! I’m meeting with you at 1:00pm today, is that correct?” Jamaica West, Christian spoken word artist who has blown up over the last two years, touring side by side with the likes of @IamGenetics, @wordswithEzekiel, @JackieHillPerry and @Preston_n_Perry. Currently killing it on the Xpressions tour with @whatisjoedoing and others. I reply back indeed with a bunch of smiling emoji’s.

She arrives at the studio at 12:56pm, Big fluffy hair, taupe color suede Steve Madden shoes, black jeans, black top and a cool oversized denim jacket. Clearly she gets her style from Chicago. It was one day after her birthday, so we had the chance partake in a little birthday turn up and I got to learn a lot about Ms. West. No relation to Kanye or Jerry. We jammed out to Body Art, an album that brings to her fond memories by her fellow hometown native Christion Gray. We ate cupcakes and talked about everything from CHH to her love for NASA and knowledge of the brain, the cortex and amygdala. The always snarky, sarcastic, talented poet shares some great wisdom and insight and dished on how she likes her coffee in such a poetic way, we coined the article FROetry. Enjoy!

So okay first thing first you’re not Jamaican. Where are you from?

Ohio. Funny story I have had a family come to one of my shows so proud thinking I was Jamaican. My mother named me after her best-friend who is Jamaican. She just loved her spirit.  It works now with what I do and who I am but It’s always a little awkward. But I am not Jamaican I’m a black girl from Ohio.
