In the last quarter of 2018 Former First Lady Michelle Obama set the world on fire with the release of her book, Becoming on November 13, 2018. According to Penguin Random House, “Becoming” sold more than 2 million copies in its first 15 days and became a No. 1 seller in Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Greece and North America.
If crushing records weren’t enough the sold out 10-city book tour has solidified Michelle Obama’s rock star status. The book is excellent, but the tour moments are just as magical.
- The first tour stop was Chicago, IL which is Michelle Obama’s hometown. Oprah led the “intimate conversation” and when asked about boarding a marine helicopter after Trump was sworn in Michelle Obama said that she was tempted to look over her shoulder and say, “Bye, Felicia.” But she didn’t. However, the fact that she thought about it and admitted it makes her our real and personable.
- Michelle Obama plans to donate 10% of all ticket sales from each tour stop to local charities, schools, and community groups.
- During the tour Michelle enlisted, The Roots, ‘Questlove’ to create a playlist for her book. Now that’s a rock star move! There are three playlists that lead you from 1964-1979, 1980-1997, and 1997-2008. Comprised of about 100 songs from James Brown, Erykah Badu, Prince, Hall & Oats, and others, the playlists are fire and available on Spotify and on Questlove’s Pandora station.
- During her Brooklyn tour stop the audience erupted with applause and cheers when she shared her thoughts on marriage and having it all. “Marriage still ain’t equal, y’all. It ain’t equal. I tell women that whole ‘you can have it all’ – mmm, nope. Not at the same time – it’s a lie. It’s not always enough to lean in, because that [expletive] doesn’t work.” Most weren’t expecting that response but I find it refreshing to hear from one of our most influential leaders on how having it all is difficult even for those who appear to have it all.
