As we draw closer to the gift-giving season many of us experience the same problem every year.  What gift do I give to the person who has it all?  I remember gifting my mom with a ring and her favorite perfume for the first time as a young adult.  That was the peak for how I had envisioned showing my mom how much I loved her. Jewelry, purses, and perfume. After that, I was stumped for a while until I realized the power and impact of experiences.  The unassuming gift that keeps on giving.

Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University who has been studying happiness for over two decades says, “We buy things to make us happy, and we succeed. But only for a while. New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them.”  However, experiences last longer and millennials understand this better than most.  On the last episode of Insecure Molly gifted Issa with 30thdram-free birthday. A fun-filled evening to an outdoor showing of her favorite movie!

Check out some simple ways that you can gift someone with a great experience!

1.   Who doesn’t love to travel?  And don’t worry about breaking the bank.  Take a look around give the gift of local travel. Take a tour outside or around your neighborhood, city or county.  Explore a cool museum or historical landmark.

2.   Help someone check off an activity on their YOLO list!

3.   Give back time.  We all have the same number of hours in the day but consider helping someone with their “To Do List allowing them more time for themselves

4.   Be the gift.  Maybe that special person really wants your presence at their wedding, graduation, or family event.  Through your sacrifice gift them with your presence as you bear witness and share their experience.
